Hello Everyone,
This has 2 messages
1- The 2nd Vattachi Youth conference
2- Internatnational Youth conference in Hungary
Blessings, Patricia SYA USA

Dear Subud Youth all over the world,

We want to invite you all to consider attending the second Vittachi Youth Conference, "Creating a Sustainable HumanFuture."

When?

Early August, 2003.

Where?

Atalanta Project, Crestone, Colorado, USA, at about 2,400meters elevation in a high desert landscape at the base of the Sangrede Cristo mountains. The valley where the conference will be held, calledthe San Luis Valley, is known for its peacefulness and is sacred to Nativepeople of the region. Their web site is http://www.atalanta.org

What?

What does it mean to live in a sustainable way in the 21st century? In an experiential manner we will explore suchenvironmental issues as wise use of resources including solar energy, permaculture and green building techniques. How do we create communities thatcan sustain the human spirit?

This conference will explore the "in"vironment" of culture andspirituality as well as the "en"vironment of our biosphere. What willdistinguish this youth conference will be a continued exploration of the issuesbrought up at the first Vittachi Human Education meeting of how to live ina way that each person's personal talents can be developed and supportedthrough a learning process that is guided by love and wisdom from withinboth ourselves and from others.

We have chosen Atalanta as the site for this meeting becauseits mission as a project complements ours. This is Atalanta's missionstatement:

"We call Atalanta a Hearthfire Community. This is because wehold to our vision of keeping the fires burning for our local as well asour world society to survive harmoniously. Atalanta is a place wherepeople can come and experience a new way of thinking and behaving, a way thatwill ensure a peaceful individual and collective future. The concept ofsustainability provides the coals with which we keep the fires alive. Togetherwe can nurture the spark that motivates us to steward our planetwithout compromising our inherent connection to all life. The essenceof Atalanta is sustainability in the environment, the economy, in culturalenrichment & celebration and social well being. Atalanta provides a 'motherfire' from which you may come and light your own torch, carry it back toyour own community, and pass it on."

Rarely in the Western world do students explore therelationship between how we live our internal lives and how we treat the external worldand make ourlivings. This conference shall explore this convergence whichrequires us both to educate ourselves on all levels and walk gently on theearth.

Who?

Any youth from around the world in good health from 18 (in2003) to 30 with place for some adult observers and facilitators.English will be the conference language, and we apologize ahead of time for notbeing able to offer translation services. You'll need to be reasonablyfluent in English. We say "in good health" because of the high altitude. If youhave a heart problem, the high altitude could be too difficult for you. Thenearest hospital is one hour away in Alamosa, Colorado. Our dorm andconference facilities will be accessible to people on crutches or in wheelchairs.

How?

We will learn through hands-on experience about ways ofbuilding and living that use natural resources wisely. We will visit some of thespiritual centers in the area to learn about their approaches to life. We will doart and music together to express our creativity. We will discuss ideas--butnot as much as in Jakarta. We will make sure to have fun. We will meet someinteresting people with useful wisdom for us. We will build somethingtogether that will be a lasting contribution to the Atalanta community from ourconference. What that will be has not yet been decided. It may be a path, agarden, a solar collector to heat our water--something we can all do together.Your interests and the needs of Atalanta will help determine what this groupcontribution will be.

How can you help now?

We need a youth planning team to assess people's majorinterests and plan the schedule to meet them. I would like to develop asurvey to send out to Vittachi conference attendees and their friends andother youth groups to discover what people are most interested in learningin their week focusing on sustainability. A survey would ask questionssuch as "Rank your interest in these areas of resource management: Solarenergy, green building, water management, etc. Rank your interest inlearning about : permaculture, forestry management, urban gardening, smalllivestock enterprises. Are you interested in learning conflict resolutiontechniques?

Another way you can help is to send this email to friends ofyours who might be interested. Spread the word.

We don't yet have costs. We should by early August this year. We will let you know as soon as we have them. We will do all we can to keep theconference affordable. Again we plan to have limited scholarshipsavailable, but if you'd like to attend, start saving and doing local fuindraisingnow. We'll have to be selective, so, unfortunately, those most effectivein finding funds on their own will be the ones most likely to be able to attend.

Size of the conference will be limited to two groups of 60people each, for a week each. This limitation is due to the fragile natureofhigh desert land. If we had more people on the land at a time,we would damage the local environment. The smaller group will alsoprovide the chance for people to get to know everyone.

Please let me, Illene Pevec (ipevec@istar.ca), know if you areinterested in helping to plan the conference. Mark your calendars and startinvestigating funds in your home countries to help you attend aninternational educational gathering like this. I am working with Reynold (Dr. ReynoldFeldman) on this conference but will be the person this time with whom youcommunicate. As soonas I hear from those of you who want to help plan, we will forma youth planning team who will undoubtedly be doing some of thecommunicating as the conference plans develop.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible next year.

With love,

Illene Pevec, Coordinator 2nd Vittachi Conference-Creating a Sustainable Human Future

P.S. I hope those of you in the Jakarta area will takeadvantage of the opportunity to meet with Reynold and Scherto Saturday morning,June 29, at Wisma Subud in Cilandak. They will be able to discuss plans fornext year'sconference with you at that time and will also suggest thecreation of a scholarship fund among the Indonesian group to make sure atleast one of their number can attend Vittachi 2.

Dear Subud YouthI was at the UN conference on the child in New York in early Mayand Iattended a wonderful workshop put on by youth who belong to agroup calledPeaceways/Young General Assembly Secretariat. These 3 youth ledeveryonethrough a process of analyzing how their organization involvedtheparticipation of youth in creating and delivering services, programs , etc.to youth. I found it to be one of the best, most usefulpresentations Iwent to at the UN. The people doing it were 16 to 18 years old,so that ispretty impressive.

Peaceways is participating and helping to organize anenvironmentalcongress for youth ages 12 to 24. It is July 26 to August 3 inNorthernHungary. It costs $300.US plus your transportation to Budapest. The purposeis to create a booklet of 60 ideas of environmental projectsyouth can doand present it at the UN World Summit on Sustainable DevelopmentinJohannesburg in Sept. 2002.

When I spoke to them about our conference at Atalanta onsustainablesolutions for a human future next August they suggested we sendsomeone tothis one to tell the international youth about our conference inColoradoand invite them. I am wondering if there is one of you who livesin Europewho might be able to get local funding to go and participate, learn lots inthe process and invite everyone to consider coming to ourconference inColorado in 2003. The Human Future group can offer to you $100.towardsthe total cost of this meeting. The ideal would be someone who went to the first meeting inJakarta, butperhaps there will be a Subud youth in Europe who didn't go tothe Jakartameeting but is wanting to go to the one in Colorado who wouldlike to go toHungary.

If there is someone who can get funding to pay their travel andthe other$200. and would like to go and represent us will you let meknow? Theywill hold a place for us until June 20.So if you are interested you will have to let me know asap.Thanks.Illene pevecipevec@istar.ca
