1. RD CONGO VOLCANO DISASTER - Recommendation
2. KOSOVO FAMILY UPDATE
3. KSG WORKSHOP IN UK
4. WORLD'S LOWEST ECONOMIES 1. RECOMMENDED RESPONSE TO THE VOLCANIC DISASTER IN RD CONGO

SDI has made contact with Oxfam UK, our new partner NGO working in D.R. Congo to assist one of the projects of Subud members there. Rosanna asked them about the role of Oxfam UK in the recent disaster in Goma. Here is the reply from Emmanuel Kayumba, the staff person we have been in communication with: "Thanks a lot for your inquiry about our intervention in Goma. Yes, Oxfam UK are carrying out emergency aid to people affected by the volcano disaster. We have been working for long time in Goma where we had an office, which unfortunately has been completely destroyed. Presently, we are the coordinating agency for water and sanitation activities within the local network of international NGOs carrying out emergency aid to volcano victims. Any donations will be really appreciated."

SDI has been asked to research and recommend how Subud members can respond to different world crises. In this case, SDI recommends that anyone who feels moved to assist the people effected by the volcanic eruptions in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo make a donation to Oxfam UK earmarked "RDC Goma Relief".

You can donate directly on their website http://www.oxfam.org.uk or via SD International http://www.susiladharma.org or to any national SD organization willing to participate in this effort - please check with them first.

2. AOMAA ONE-TO-ONE PROGRAM UPDATE

Lucia Cargill in USA coordinated support for a family from Kosovo to come to USA for medical treatment. She wrote this update on what has happened to the family on their return to Kosovo and makes an appeal to cover final costs.

"I have news from the Veliu family in Kosovo now. They are doing very well in spite of the terrible cold weather. Minire began to work immediately on arriving. She had great news that her elementary class was evaluated as the best in the school in her absence, so she was very excited to get back to them. Faruk is well and recovering from the expected fatigue which followed his last radiation treatments during November. Arber is taking exams in Tirane, Albania, to complete his fellowship requirements. His brother, Atdhe is on his way to Belgium for some specialty training in his field of economics. Atdhe's wife, Maria, and the baby, my Goddaughter, Thesara, are still in Bulgaria, but will join him in Belgium soon. (Who do we have there for contacts?) The youngest of the three brothers, Duli, who helped with the Cow for Kosovo project, is now the official veterinarian for UNMIK, the United Nations Mission in Kosovo. So he and Minire are able to support the family right now. They sent copious holiday good wishes and thanks to all.

I took it on faith that contributions would come in to defray the transitional costs after the family left so I gave them all the money in the account for three months rent. We have only had two small donations since they left; therefore we are in financial difficulty for the first time in the project.

I am stuck without volunteers to lift the furniture out of their apartment and not enough money to hire men and a truck. I have to get the things out of the apartment or will be charged more rent, and do not have money to pay that either. We were paid up through Jan 7. In addition, there are two bills (at least), $84 for the washing machine repair, and $146 for the electricity.

Please help with these last transitional costs ASAP. I would be most grateful to have the pressure off and complete the close down of the apartment. We are hoping my new job will start Feb. 1, but until Mar 1, at least, I will not have a paycheck or more personal money to spend, which is too late. Please help now if you have intended to do so in the past and did not have a chance. Remember, many small donations put together accomplished this project and sent the family home safely.

Good, good news is that all the medical bills have been absorbed by the hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin Physicians as of last Monday, including almost $5000 in laboratory costs, Arber's emergency room visit, Minire's lab work and doctor's visits, vaccinations for flu and pneumonia, and all the enormous amount of radiology. . . multiple CT scans, MRIs, bone scans, and x-rays. What an amazing gift! I figure they were given well over $100,000 in medical care, including Faruk's surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Please help me close this project out ASAP.

3. KALIMANTAN SUPPORT GROUP - TRAINING WEEKEND LEWES (UK) - FEBRUARY 22-24, 2002

- Are you interested in Kalimantan? Or are you wondering what it's all about?

- Do you have concerns about sustainability and community development? Would you like to know more about one of Subud's approaches to the development of Central Kalimantan?

- Have you heard about the Kalimantan Support Group? Have you ever wanted to be involved but didn't know how to do so?

The Kalimantan Support Group (KSG) was started 20 years ago in the UK. It is a group of Subud members dedicated to supporting the people of Central Kalimantan through activities aimed at achieving Bapak's vision for it. We have been working with local communities to raise the livelihood levels in impoverished villages around the Tangkiling and the Upper Kahayan areas.

We are also looking to build on our network of worldwide individuals interested in committing to help in all aspects of the work of the KSG. We need people of all ages, talents and levels of experience to enable us to expand our potential. Our work offers participants a vehicle for the development of their talents and an opportunity to find a role and to gain from the challenges facing the people of Central Kalimantan whom we're working with.

This is the reason why we are organising a training weekend in Lewes (UK) on February 22-24, to offer an opportunity to find out what the KSG is all about. Find out how you could become an active participant, by discovering your talents and skills and thus helping the KSG to become more efficient in fulfilling its mission.

The first day (Saturday) will be focused on what the KSG has been and is doing and what it plans to be doing in the future. Hardin Tibbs, of Industrial Ecology fame, will be holding a session on the use of strategic orientation as a planning tool for the future of KSG and its expanding activities.

The second day will be focused more on the roles of individuals, to help them discovering their talent and thinking style and find out how each one can fit in & benefit from the KSG. Lorna Dowson-Collins, a personal development and business consultant who has been deeply involved in the KSG for many years, will facilitate the weekend. The number of participants will be limited to 20, and the cost (not inc. accommodation & dinner) will be approx. £30.

If you wish to register or need further information on the weekend or on the KSG, please contact as soon as possible: Rosanne Le Roy: rosanneleroy@yahoo.com Hanna Evans: +44 -(0)7799 417 924 or +44-01273 471 170
