Hooray! The news is in and we're all heading for Christchurch in 3.5 years time!

How about a big shout out to all the people who've worked so hard for years to put the proposal together, gain support and make this whole thing possible! Especially Ramzi Addison as the Subud New Zealand chair of the last four years (and who has graciously agreed to stay on as committee councilor); Hammond Peek as Christchurch chairperson and Ben Graham as SNZ treasurer!
Also a HUGE thank you to the city of Christchurch for supporting the group financially and publically! From what I understand the city wants this congress as much as the Subud group! Smile

There are lots more people to thank but I don't even know who they all are yet! I'll definately post more info as I get it. Hope to see you all there! Feel free to email me (I'm doing my best to fill my role as national secretary) if you have any questions at reynolmaya@gmail.com.

Hell, one will need another 2 weeks before or after World Congress just to tour the place!!

At least! I decided I needed even longer to see all of New Zealand, so I just moved here. Smile
Of course now I'm in school and I hardly travel at all. I've been here six months and haven't even seen the South Island. That's one reason the congress is so exciting to me--new places!

Okay, I've also learned that many special thanks have to be given to Michael Chapman and Renata Peek, who worked tirelessly on the Congress Committee to get the proposal ready. Cheers everybody!!

Well, I've just come home after a weekend in Christchurch where I got to see the site for the next world congress, and spend two days in meetings talking about it. What a wonderful experience! It was the first national committee meeting New Zealand has had since the announcement that Christchurch is to be the host of the next world congress, so obviously it was the main topic of the meeting, and it's gotten me so excited all over again! The attitude about the congress is so good, and there was a very strong feeling that this has got to be a very widely inclusive project, both within New Zealand and in the wider world.

We got to go on a tour of the site, and I have three words: Giant Latihan Halls! Aside from that, the site is absolutely beautiful, and walking around we kept saying to each other, "you can just see it filled with Subud people, can't you?" Smile The Convention Centre is located on the edge of a park which a small river runs through and there are huge gorgeous trees and gondolas going up and down the river! It's so perfect!

I hope you all are able to come! It's going to be so wonderful.
Love to you all,
Maya

Sounds wonderful!! God Willing, I will be there. I have been very fortunate to be able to attend every world congress since I was opened back in 1963. The first one for me was in Tokyo in 1967. What a trip! Each congress has been a uniquely different and wonderful experience. Little did I know when I joined Subud that it would turn me into a world traveler! As long as my mind and body function I will keep going.
On another subject, are the areas filmed in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy anywhere near the congress site? That might make an interesting tour during the congress.
Please send more pictures of the site and New Zealand scenery if you can.
Thanks for putting up this thread,
Rachman

Hi there, Rachman! I know you from Family Camps and stuff, I think. Wow. Every World Congress since 1967? That's one of the most impressive things I've ever heard in my life! Smile That's great! I sure hope to see you here!
I've just done a little preliminary research on the net about LOTR tours, and from what I can find there seems to be only one organised day trip departing from Christchurch and that goes to the location where they shot Edoras, and it's a bit expensive. There are lots of longer tours around the two islands, but they would all take a few days and a couple thousand dollars. I will definately bring that up here though, because I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in anything Lord of the Ring-sy, and we should definately get some stuff organised for the Congress. I'll post more when I learn more. Smile
Anywho, posting some pictures here.

Climbing the Southern Alps

I took this picture myself near Hamilton, which is the area where the Hobbiton bits were filmed for Lord of the Rings. Hobbiton, by the by, is the only bit of set left standing anywhere in New Zealand. They took everything else down, which doesn't detract from the natural beauty of the places, of course. Wink

I got this pic off the website for the Edoras location tour that runs out of Christchurch.

Punting on the Avon River that runs right past the Christchurch Convention Centre--sorry I couldn't find any decent pictures of the park and river right outside the centre, cos it's beautiful.

This is the main hall in the Convention Centre--very good space for thousands of people doing latihan. Smile

The Foyer at the Con Centre

View from the top of the Foyer when it's all decked out.

This is the main auditorium at the town hall. I'm thinking Entertainment Nights. Smile

Oh, and here's some links if anyone wants to check out some stuff. Smile

http://www.convention.co.nz/
Website for the Convention Centre/Town Hall

http://www.newzealand.com/travel/
This is the official New Zealand tourism website (which recently won a Webby Award, I think), and is really good if anyone is thinking of taking some time to do some sightseeing around the country. They also have a very good Lord of the Rings section. Smile

Hopefully there will be a proper Congress website getting up soon which will have lots of good info. Smile

Maya,
Are you Roosmiwati's daughter? It is hard to tell what you look like from your picture, with the camera in front of your face. How about some pictures of you!
Thanks for sending the pics.
So how did you end up in New Zealand anyway?
Rachman

Hi Rachman,
Yes, I am Roosmiwati's daughter. And I've changed my avatar--is that better? As for how I ended up in New Zealand, ...I'd had a word with the Big Man Upstairs and found out the Congress was going to be here so I thought I'd better get a head start! Wink

An Insiders view of christchurch Razz,
I've been living here in christchurch for 4 years now,
because we did testing on where was the right place, you know how it goes.
And Michael Chapman suggested that I *Huge emphasis on the I bit* be the youth Co-ord
for it all, and i tell you nothing scares me more...
but heres christchurch from my point of view.

^ the cathedral and the giant ice cream cone as me and my friends call it
5 minutes from my school very nice place, currently hosting the world buskers festival
in its square.

^ Hagley park Smile

hmm... its harder to find good images of christchurch than i thought.

but well, its a nice place, big enough to host the congress
but small enough to still give that inviting feeling Smile
theres plenty of things to do, most of which i would overlook having lived here so long.
hmmm any questions people may have please feel free to ask me :O
even if its a question for the people running the show, i can always slip in an offer
to make some one tea and then trap them with a barrage of questions *innocent look*

one thing that is "being discussed"
is the feeding of everyone, and the option of the catering at the convention centre isnt
exactly what we're after (understanding alot of subud members coming wont have unlimited cashflow)
whats being discussed is a marquee in the park, (ya the one shown above)
where subud members could go for meals.

its all very much in the discussion stage atm i think. Razz lots to organise in only 3 years.
and i'll leave it at that.
