Company Profile

Our Aims

Founded by Artistic Director Robin Wyllie in 2003, Open Arms Dance Company aims to produce contemporary dance works rich in cultural content that inspire, engage the imagination, and are thematically accessible and relevant to a wide audience.

Our notion of culture refers to a world culture that has existed since the beginning of humanity. It is evident in all of the major cultural traditions and practices that have existed. It is not a material culture, a consumer culture, or an academic culture, it is a deeply felt human culture that belongs above these activities and is accessible to every human being.

All A taste of Beijing today.........

....two weeks in, and this weekend I am off to check some of it out.....

For four months this Spring I studied Putonghua (Standard National Mandarin Chinese) in Shanghai. Now I am in Beijing, teaching English to 'China's elite' at Tsinghua University, all of which is great fun and very fulfilling, but tiring all the same....

One channel I regularly watch on TV is China Central Television 9 or CCTV 9. This is China's BBC World or International Channel. Such a channel has the remit of presenting an informed and improved understanding of the past, present and future China. One programme is called "Rediscovering China", a kind of reportage feature. Recently there was a report titled:

Da Shanzi: the legend of art and spaces

Here is a western reporters account for the channel, I feel it has a fairly neutral and light hearted perspective on things. It is just one flavour of so many flavours well worth tasting when it comes to China:

In today's Rediscovering China, we are going to tell you a story about art and spaces.

The State-owned factories housed in the massive Bauhaus style buildings, including Factory 798, have a history tinged with glory. Walking around, it is quite possible you will bump into model laborers , whose stories are often retold by proud fellow workers. But like many of its contemporaries, this electronics factory is suffering from a shrinking number of contracts and soaring unemployment. The machines are still running, but not like before.

This path winds past the earsplitting noises coming from this workshop and takes us to several factories that are nearly identical-but much quieter.

The colorful decorations and posters, the newly constructed glass and steel betray the owners. Who lives behind the closed doors and windows? Why do they come here?
